MAILLARO, ANTONY

A funeral mass was offered Jan. 14 at St. Aloysius Church for Anthony Maillaro, Sr., 89, affectionately known to family, friends and the community as “Pop”. He passed away Jan. 9. Anthony was a lifelong resident of Jersey City. Anthony lived his life for his family, and serviced the community. He has ended an era, being known as one of the last fruit and vegetable peddlers of his time. Many may remember him shouting through the streets, “Freestone Peaches, Red Ripe Watemelons, Cantaloupe; get your Hard Ripe Tomatoes.”
Later in his life, in 1981, along with his family, he became the proprietor of 440 Farms, a fruit and vegetable business in Jersey City, where he worked up to just days before he passed. You would often find him outside selling fish, or exchanging words with a customer who always ended up walking away as “Pop’s” friend. Anthony lived his life with a zest for his family, fulfilling an honest day’s work, being a friend, serving his community, and just being a man always known to be filled with integrity and wisdom. He was always one to give advice on life’s learning experiences to all of his family and friends and of sharing stories of the old days, growing up in Jersey City.
Anthony was predeceased by his wife Josephine, “Jean”. He is survived by his children, James “Jack” and his wife Joanne, Christine, Anthony and his wife Anna. He was also the grandparent of Joanne and her husband Michael, James and his wife Teresa, Lisa and her husband Edward and Anthony Gerard and his great grandhcildren, Michael, Jacqueline, Nicholas, Ava, Gina, Giuliana, Francesca and Olivia. brother of Elizabeth Fosello, Felix Fosello, Christine Masciale and the late Joseph Fosello, Vincent Fosello, Ralph Maillaro and Louise Maillaro and many nieces and nephews.
