HOBOKEN AND BEYOND — Over Thanksgiving weekend, when many readers were away, we profiled a Hoboken mom who is raising two special needs kids. Her 3-year-old son is autistic, and her 2-year-old daughter, Zoemy, has a chromosome disorder so rare that few doctors were willing to treat her. It took her mother six months to find a local doctor who would treat her, and the family still has many challenges ahead.
“For six months she has had no meds and no doctors. Nobody would touch her because of the chromosome 1 [issues]. [Doctors] would say, I have never seen something like this,” said the mom, Noemi Alicea. “She needs a primary doctor. She needs a lot of referrals.”
Now, her mom is looking for an apartment suitable for her to take care of both children, with their special needs. She can also use other kinds of help. You can read more about Noemi and Zoemy here. Her e-mail address is at the end of the story.
