St. Augustine’s unveils new science lab
St. Augustine’s School in Union City will unveil its renovated science labs on Thursday, Dec. 6. To celebrate the occasion, the school will open its doors to friends from 8:30 a.m. to 5 pm and from 6:30 until 9. Guests will be able to view the students’ work since September as well as the new facility and equipment.
The road to renovation began in May when St. Augustine received the Raskoband Sisters of Charity Grants. Mrs. San Diego and Mrs. Damiano, 4-6 grade and 7-8 grade science teachers respectively, along with Sr. Johanna Quinto, development director, spent the summer putting together the supplies for the labs. Among the acquired supplies are digital microscopes, slides, magnets, K’Nex kits, radiometers, solar hot airballoons, prisms and several learning kits.

Clarification on UC council meeting
A recent brief about the Nov. 14 Union City commissioners meeting noted that members of the audience at the meeting complained that the mayor and elected officials appeared to skip over the part of the meeting that allowed the public to comment. However, a review of the transcript of that five-minute meeting shows that the mayor did, in fact, open up the meeting to public comments once at the beginning of the meeting and then again at the end. At the end, one member of the public spoke.
West New York students honored at Jets game as reward for Eat Right, Move More
Six West New York Public School 4 School students, Assistant Principal Anthony DeMarco, and Physical Education teacher Frank Arena represented their school Sunday, Dec. 2 as the New York Jets and the Christie Administration recognized the school’s nutrition achievements during the Jets/Arizona Cardinals football game at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.
PS 4 is this year’s grand prize winner of the Eat Right, Move More program, which challenged schools to demonstrate a commitment to providing students with breakfast in the classroom, as well as to serving more fresh fruits and vegetables and more whole grains. They also had to demonstrate efforts to improve nutrition and physical activity among their students. The program is administered by the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA).
The school received a $5,000 prize, which it plans to use to update and repair the school’s salad bar serving system, increase access to daily fruits and vegetables with interesting containers and educate students with sign boards with nutrition facts and impacts of their choices. On Nov. 27, Jets Offensive Tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson visited the school to meet with students.
The students who attended the game were: Michael Alvarez, Max Collazo, Malik Harper, Rachel Huacon, Christopher Montalvo and Adrienne Sabatier. The students were chosen through a raffle at their school. The group was treated to lunch by the Jets, brought down onto the field before the game and honored on the stadium Jumbotron during the first quarter.
Adrienne Sabatier said she felt very special and happy to be chosen to attend the game.
“I was freaking out, pinching myself and asking if this is a dream,” said Sabatier, who was part of an on-field performance as a Junior Flight Crew Cheerleader at a preseason Jets’ game. “It’s good to eat well. If you eat badly it will hurt you the rest of your life.”
Hoboken Menorah lighting this Sunday
Chabad of Hoboken is sponsoring their 11th annual Menorah lighting at Hoboken City Hall, 94 Washington St., recognizing elected local and state officials for their efforts and leadership during Hurricane Sandy.
The event takes place this Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012 at 5:30 p.m. There will be hot latkes, donuts, chocolate gelt, funky dreidels dancing and more. Honored guests will include Mayor Dawn Zimmer, Senator Menendez, Congressman Sires, other area mayors and members of the Hoboken city council. The event is free and all are welcome.
A children’s program begins at 3:30 pm inside City Hall and features the Yeladudes Theater performing the story of the “Three Challot” and arts and crafts. Performance begins at 4 pm and tickets for the show are $10 or $ 8 on the web.

Councilwoman hosting Sandy fundraiser in Secaucus
“Hudson County Recovers,” a non-profit organization formed to help Hudson County victims of Hurricane Sandy, will hold a fundraising event Thursday, Dec. 20.
The event will be held at La Reggia restaurant, 40 Wood Ave., in Secaucus from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. All proceeds will be used to benefit local non-profit organizations involved in helping Hudson County recover from the effects of the hurricane and flooding, and all donations are fully tax deductible.
