Reports: Grand Prix race on WNY, Weehawken streets held up until 2014
It’s on and off and on and off again.
Formula One’s first Grand Prix to be held on the streets of Hudson County next June will apparently be postponed until the following year, according to an NJ.com story that cites Weehawken Mayor Richard Turner.
The race was supposed to be run next summer on the streets of West New York and Weehawken.
An unnamed local official in the article said that the race organizers are behind regarding permits and road repairs.
A few weeks ago, sources said the race would not be run on time, but others disputed those rumors.
Friday morning, the Associated Press quoted Formula One’s Bernie Ecclestone saying that the race will not run next year.

NJ Transit to pay for ARC tunnel that never was
Two Weehawken home owners were awarded $8.15 million last week by a Hudson County jury for the properties they were forced to give up when NJ Transit seized it through eminent domain three years ago to make room for a commuter rail tunnel to Manhattan, according to the Jersey Journal.
The project, to have been called the ARC tunnel, was squashed by Gov. Christopher Christie two years ago for projected cost overruns that would have totaled around $4 billion. The costs would have been shouldered by state tax payers.
NJ Transit also agreed to pay $5.6 million to tunnel’s design firm, Barnard/Judlau Joint Venture, on Monday, the article said. They had filed a claim of $10.3 million in June.
Thirteen months earlier, the state settled the $271 million spent on the tunnel project for $95 million.

PERC to hold annual fundraiser
The Palisades Emergency Residence Corporation (PERC) will hold their Annual Beer and Wine Tasting Party on Tuesday, Oct. 23 as they honor Grove Reformed Church and celebrate the PERC Kids Program. Be sure to check out the display of the children’s artwork that night.
Grove Reformed Church in North Bergen is the new home to the PERC Kids Program, which includes a Homework Club that takes place during the school year, and a Summer Activities Program.
In 2011, the program needed to find a new space. When Marie Furlong, a deacon at the church, heard the program might be jeopardy if a new space was not found, she sprang into action. The church had a great space that was available weekdays – complete with a gym.
PERC Kids was established in 2007 to help elementary children of low-income families. These children come mostly from households where English is not the first language, and often their parents are unable to help with homework due to language barriers. (PERC runs a homeless shelter in Union City.)
Certified teachers work closely with the students, and review test scores and report cards to identify areas which may need improving. To date all of our children have graduated from grade to grade, and many of them have made the Dean’s List or Honor Roll.
The fundraiser will be held Oct. 23, 6 to 9 p.m. at Antonia’s By the Park located at 9011 Palisade Ave. in North Bergen. Tickets are $50.

Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA is currently recruiting volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to insure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes.
CASA (court appointed special advocate) and its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for the judges and safeguard the interests of the children while they are in the foster care system.
Please attend an information session to learn more about the program and the role of its volunteers. Sessions are held each month. Hudson County has nearly 700 children in foster care; most have been removed from their homes for abuse or neglect.
