Urban historian presents master’s thesis on rise and fall of 111 First St., Jersey City

JERSEY CITY AND BEYOND — Some may remember the converted factory at 111 First St. in Jersey City that housed several floors of artists’ lofts until the artists were evicted in 1995. It was a cornerstone of the artists’ studio tour for many years.

The demise of the downtown building, which will eventually be replaced by a residential tower, inspired urban historian David Goodwin, who wrote a master’s thesis on it.
One of the centerpiece buildings within the Powerhouse Arts District in Downtown Jersey City is one for the books, so to speak…

Goodwin will appear during the 2012 Jersey City Artists’ Studio Tour on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. at the New Jersey Room, 3rd Floor, Main Library, to present his research. Jersey City Free Public Library, 472 Jersey Avenue, Jersey City, NJ 07302.
The tour is co-sponsored by the Hudson Reporter newspapers. Watch for more about the tour weekend at hudsonreporter.com or in your local print edition.
