Substitution

Question: In high school baseball and softball, when a courtesy runner appears in the game for either the pitcher or catcher, is this considered a substitution on the lineup card?

Answer: Although the position of courtesy runner, when used, must be a non-starting player (sub), it is not considered a substitution. The plate umpire will record the participation on the lineup card (BB- Speed-up rule No. 5; SB – Rule 2, Sec. 57, Art. 2 & Rule 8, Sec. 9, Art. 1-7).

Question: Can a substitute who has already participated in the game re-enter the game as long as he/she enters the same batting position?

Answer: BB – Substitutes can only enter once in the game; hence, they do not have re-entry privileges (Rule 3, Sec. 1, Art. 1-3). SB – Any starter or substitute can be withdrawn from the game and re-entered once. She is required to occupy the same batting when in the game; hence, starters and subs are allowed two entries during the game (Rule 3, Sec. 3, Art. 5).
