Seniors celebrate

The senior citizen picnic has been an annual event in North Bergen since 1992. Town Spokesperson Phil Swibinski says it has grown into one of the township’s strongest community traditions. The picnic thanks the town’s seniors for all they have done to make North Bergen and the nation great.
“It’s grown over the years,” says Mayor Nicholas Sacco. “Our senior population gets together at least once a year. Their generation has given us so much. I think this is the time to show appreciation to the people that built this country.”
Nearly 1,000 seniors attended the picnic this year, and attendance seems to increase yearly, according to Swibinski. The picnic is run jointly by the township and the North Bergen Housing Authority.

Seniors were honored with food, dancing, music, and dance contest at Schuetzen Park banquet hall. Admission was free and transportation was included.

“I think it’s a great idea because every year you can get together with your friends, enjoy the music,” said senior Maria Lopez. “I love living in North Bergen.”
“North Bergen’s the best community,” said senior Frances Otilia.
