Christie Administration announce grants for two North Bergen projects
The Christie Administration announced on Wednesday that a $210,000 grant has been awarded to North Bergen to replace a traffic signal and a $482,069 grant has been approved for the New York Susquehanna and Western Railroad to build a rail siding in the township.
The $210,000 grant is administered by the state Department of Transportation (DOT) through the Local Aid Infrastructure Fund program, while the rail grant comes through the NJDOT Rail Freight Assistance Program. The grants are among 25 grants totaling $11.4 million that will enable 14 municipalities, eight freight railroads and three airports to advance infrastructure improvement projects.
Palisades Medical Center gets acclaim
Palisades Medical Center has received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s “Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.” The award recognizes Palisades Medical Center’s commitment and success in implementing excellent care for stroke patients, according to evidence-based guidelines.
To receive the award, Palisades Medical Center achieved 85 percent or higher adherence to all indicators for two or more consecutive 12-month intervals and achieved 75 percent or higher compliance with six of 10 measures, which are reporting initiatives to measure quality of care.
“With a stroke, time lost is brain lost, and the [award] demonstrates Palisades Medical Center’s commitment to being one of the top hospitals in the country for providing aggressive, proven stroke care,” said Bruce J. Markowitz, president and CEO of Palisades Medical Center. “We will continue with our focus on providing care that has been shown in the scientific literature to quickly and efficiently treat stroke patients with evidence-based protocols,”
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
Palisades Medical Center also announced the certification of its Cardiovascular Rehabilitation Program by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). Palisades Medical Center was recognized for its commitment to improving the quality of life by enhancing standards of care.

Library events announced
Mayor Nicholas Sacco, the Board of Trustees, and Library Director Sai Rao have announced the township library’s fall programs, which begin on Sept. 17 and run through Dec. 21. Fall programming registration begins on Monday, Sept. 10 at 9 a.m. and those interested must register in person. Programs are open to North Bergen and Guttenberg residents from ages two and a half to adults. A copy of a birth certificate and proof of residency are required for enrollment.

The library will have a College Admissions Seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. The event is open to parents and high school students who are planning to attend college.
“Wings of Gold: World War II Aviation” will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. It will be presented by Michael Bachik who was a B-25 pilot and aviation pioneer. It is a presentation on World War II aviation featuring a collection of World War II relics.

MSG Varsity will televise local high school football games
With fall sports in full swing, MSG Varsity is adding Union City and North Bergen into the line-up which will appear on channel 14 with Optimum TV. The game is on Friday, Sept. 14 and will air on Monday, Sept. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
New Jersey Meadowlands Commission announces fall events
Get an up-close view of the Meadowlands District’s spectacular scenic beauty and wildlife with a two-hour guided pontoon boat cruise of the Hackensack River and its surrounding marshes. Experienced NJMC staff will discuss the region’s human and environmental history and point out birds and other wildlife along the way. Pontoon boat cruises depart from River Barge Park, 260 Outwater Lane, Carlstadt on Sept. 12, 14, 18 and 20 at 5 p.m. and are $15. They are open to ages 10 and up.

The Third-Tuesday-of-the-Month will be a free two-hour guided nature walk that will take you to legendary Harrier Meadow in North Arlington. The 70-acre site, usually off limits to the public, features ponds and tidal impoundments and plenty of birds. If weather permits, there may be a bird-banding demonstration by an NJMC naturalist. Meeting time will be 10 a.m. at the entrance to Harrier Meadow on Disposal Road. You can also meet at visitors’ parking lot at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst at 9:40 a.m. to carpool. Family Science Night, H2Olympics is on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. This is an opportunity to have fun and celebrate the end of the “Olympic Summer” with games and activities about water.
