County approves open space grants; money comes from surcharge on your county taxes

HUDSON COUNTY — Helping to defray the costs associated with developing or upgrading parks or preserving historic places, the Hudson County freeholders approved $2.4 million grants at their Thursday meeting.
Grants included $500,000 for work on the proposed waterfront park in North Bergen and Guttenberg, $500,000 for Pier B restoration in Weehawken, $250,000 for improvements to Stevens Field in Hoboken, $250,000 for improvement to Ellsworth Park in Union City, $250,000 for the Bayonne Riverwalk Greenway, $100,000 for Lincoln Park Fountain Restoration in Jersey City, $400,000 for replacing windows the main library in Jersey City, and $50,000 for reservoir stabilization in Jersey City.
These funds come from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, which gets its money from a 1 cent dedicated surcharge to the county tax rate each year.
