Secret underground passageway from Hoboken to Newark revealed?

HOBOKEN AND BEYOND — Well, probably not. Hoboken resident Joseph Spano was jogging near Eighth and Hudson streets recently and noticed this unusual manhole cover. “I saw this manhole cover, so I went back later to take a pic,” he wrote to the Reporter in an email. “I thought it might be an entry to the city of Newark.”
Hoboken has many ornate and interesting sewer covers forged in the days of yore, but we’ve never seen one that claims to belong to the city of Newark.
What’s your theory? Maybe the Ironbound was getting rid of excess iron? Or do you really know what happened?
