One dog dies, another rescued in 55th Street fire
A black Labrador retriever perished in fire at 87 West 57th Street on Aug. 18. Eight tenants were displaced.
The Bayonne Fire Department arrived on the scene at about 6:30 p.m. and was confronted with flames rolling out of the front window of the building, and flames escaping to the west side of the building, damaging an adjacent structure. Firefighters forced entry to the two-and-a-half story three-family structure and advanced hose lines into the first floor apartment to quickly extinguish a fire in the front living room.
Firefighters searched the structure for possible victims, and discovered a pet black Labrador retriever unconscious in a bedroom in the rear of the first floor. Firefighters quickly performed CPR and supplied O2 attempting to revive the animal, but the dog expired. Another dog (a German shepherd) was discovered on the second floor, and was successfully brought out to safety.
The building was reportedly occupied by one tenant on the third floor at the time of the fire, which was reported when an odor of smoke was detected. A total of eight tenants were displaced by the fire, all seeking shelter with family or friends. The building suffered serious fire damage and water damage on the first floor, and the remaining units were affected by smoke damage. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. The Police Department and Building Department were at the scene, and the owner of the building was also called.
