JERSEY CITY – The Jersey City Board of Education will on Wednesday formally vote to approve a contract for Dr. Marcia Lyles, the incoming new superintendent of schools. According to a copy of the contract offered to Lyles that was posted to the Board of Education web site, Lyles is set to begin her new post on Monday, Aug. 20 and will be given a four-year contract that will expire on June 30, 2016. The position will pay $231,000 annually, although the contract allows for the possibility of merit pay on top of this base salary. This merit pay will equal “up to 14.99 percent of [Lyles’] annual base salary.”
According to the contract, Lyles and members of the school board will spend the next two years developing “quantitative and qualitative” criteria that the superintendent must meet to recedive this merit pay.
Lyles will receive 13 sick days each year and will be paid for unused sick days “upon retirement,” although her payment for unused sick days cannot exceed $15,000.
The new school superintendent will also receive a district owned or leased car, which she will be allowed to drive for “incidental and personal use,” according to the contract.
The contract must also ne approved by the Hudson County Superintendent of Education in addition to the local school board.
The eight current members of the school board will vote on the full contract on Wednesday, August 15 at school district headquarters at 346 Claremont St.
The school board lost its ninth member earlier this month when Marvin Adames resigned to accept the position as chief prosecutor in the City of Newark.
Adames said he was advised that he would have to resign from the Jersey City Board of Education if confirmed as chief prosecutor in Newark. – E. Assata Wright
