Free Shakespeare comedy coming to Newport park

On Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 7:30 p.m., the Hip to Hip Theatre Company will perform its “Comedy of Errors” production at Newport Green Park, 700 Washington Blvd., Jersey City.
“Comedy of Errors” delves into what happens when two sets of identical twins, separated from birth, unknowingly end up in the same place at the same time. The show features an outdoor set-up at Newport’s brand-new waterfront park, complete with Hudson River and Manhattan skyline backdrops. Think Shakespeare in your local park, mixed with a bit of Monty Python!

Gospel concert set for Audubon Park

Dennis Wiley and Faithful will headline a gospel music concert at Audubon Park (Stegman Street between Bergen Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard) on Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. Sponsored by the Church of New Beginnings, the show is free to the public. For more information call (201) 892-9643.

JCMC offers classes on prenatal childbirth, breastfeeding

Jersey City Medical Center will continue to hold prenatal child birth education and breastfeeding classes through the end of the year. The hospital will also begin tours of the maternity unit on the first Saturday of every month at 4 p.m. and each Saturday during the rest of month at 12 p.m. A breastfeeding support group is held monthly at 11 a.m.
Prenatal childbirth classes will be held from 6 – 8 p.m. in the hospital’s 4 East conference room every Wednesday in August and September.
The classes will feature a combination lecture and movie presentation with topics that include: Third Trimester Changes, Signs and Symptoms of Labor; Labor and Delivery “What to Expect;” Pain Management, Post Birth Healing, Infant Care and Breast Feeding Tips; and a tour of Labor and Delivery/Postpartum. Refreshments will be served, but it is recommended that attendees eat before coming to class. The fee for the course is $125 per couple. Registration forms and payments must be received two weeks prior to the first class date.
Prenatal breastfeeding classes will also be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the hospital’s 4 East conference room with a lecture and movie presentation. Summer classes are Aug. 22 and Sept. 20. Topics include How Breastfeeding Works; Latching On and Positioning; When To Feed Your Baby; How Much Is Enough; and Breast Care. The cost for this class is $25 per couple. Registration forms must be filled out prior to the class date.

109th La Festa Italiana starts this week

Holy Rosary Church will host its 109th annual La Festa Italiana on Wednesday, Aug. 15 through Sunday, Aug. 19 from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. each night on Sixth Street in Jersey City between Brunswick and Monmouth Streets. One of the biggest draws to La Festa Italiana is the wide array of delicious cuisine. This year it includes fare from Delenio’s, Michael Anthony’s, Legal Beans, and The Mozz Boss, and some delicious dessert vendors. Also, everything from Filipino BBQ to Greek dishes and vegan fare and culinary delights come from parishioners themselves. A full-service bar from White Star Bar and Lounge will feature imported and domestic wines, beer, and spirits.
This year, musical entertainment will be provided by: The Toga Party Band (8/15), Total Soul (8/16), The Cameos (8/17), The Edge (8/18), and First Kiss Entertainment (8/19). On Thursday, an antique auto display will be featured. And on Friday, there will also be an all-year reunion night for Holy Rosary’s Ferris High Alumni. Other features include children’s rides, games of chance, hourly 50/50 drawings and a Super 50/50 to be held on Sunday at the close of La Festa 2012 at 11 p.m.. And, as a special treat for those looking for some good shopping finds, Not Yo’ Mama’s Affairs (popular in Jersey City for their annual Blitzcraft) will show off the high-quality goods from unique craft vendors for the first time at La Festa.

Hospital offers CPR training

Jersey City Medical Center is offering classes in Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
For those who prefer to learn CPR in a dynamic, hands-on group environment, JCMC has designed a two-hour course that uses the research-proven Practice-While-Watching method. Those who do not need a course completion card are encouraged to participate. The American Heart Association course will include instruction on both adult and child CPR and choking and will be taught by members of the hospital’s Emergency Medical Service (EMS).
The course will be offered Wednesday, Aug, 29 from 10 a.m. to noon at the hospital’s EMS classroom at 415 Montgomery St., Jersey City. The cost is $5 per person. Space is limited to 16 people. 3rd Annual Hamilton Park BBQ Festival is Sept. 15

The 3rd Annual Hamilton Park BBQ Festival kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 15 from noon to 8 p.m. at Hamilton Square, McWilliams Place, on the east side of Hamilton Park. The BBQ Festival is a fun, end-of-summer neighborhood event and raises money for the new Hamilton Park Conservancy. The conservancy is dedicated to assisting the city in the maintenance and improvement of historic Hamilton Park.
The festival features a number of vendors offering special dishes, mostly BBQ and BBQ related. So far Jersey City’s Legal Beans BBQ, Pennsylvania’s Jimmy’s BBQ, and the Hamilton Inn have been confirmed; more are expected to sign on soon. The festival will feature New Jersey Beer Co., Lizzmonade, and other refreshments as well. The famous Dancing Tony is coordinating live music all day.
