Hoboken Historical Museum opens new exhibit on social clubs
The Hoboken Historical Museum will hold a new exhibit on the history of the city’s social clubs beginning Sunday, July 29. The exhibit will trace the history of a wide variety of organizations (roughly 250 clubs) through the display of photographs, uniforms, medals, event programs, trophies, artifacts, and more.
A free reception will take place July 29 at the museum at 1301 Hudson St. from 2 to 5 p.m. The show will be on view until Dec. 23, and includes talks and lectures by noted historians.
Hoboken Grace will host fourth Annual Dog Party
The Hoboken Grace Community Church will host its fourth annual Dog Party Saturday, Aug. 4 at 10 a.m. in Church Square Park.
Free to the public, the party will feature several competitions, including largest dog, smallest dog, best costume, and highest jumper. Dogs will be awarded with prizes.
The event will also feature activities for children, including a bounce house, and plenty of treats.
Senators meet at Hoboken station to discuss $76M transit investment
U.S. Sens. Robert Menendez and Frank Lautenberg joined transit officials and Mayor Dawn Zimmer on Monday to announce more than $76 million in federal funding awards at the Hoboken Bus Terminal.
The funding will be used to replace over 5 percent of the New Jersey Transit bus fleet with hybrid buses and other buses powered by alternative energy.
The funding will be awarded for three projects, including the purchase of 84 new compressed natural gas buses, the purchase of 37 new hybrid cruiser buses, and the implementation of a “Bus Rapid Transit” service between Camden County and Philadelphia, which aims to decrease the length of commutes.
Mile Square Theatre will hold monologue audition class
The Mile Square Theatre, at 720 Monroe St., will host a monologue audition class Tuesdays and Thursday evenings until Aug. 9 from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The class is taught by Broadway actor Matthew Lawler and is open to 13-16 year olds. Students receive instruction in selecting, rehearsing, and performing a contemporary monologue, which they will then perform for New York City casting director David Cady of Donna DeSeta Casting.

Housing director selected for Harvard program
Neighborworks America has announced that Carmelo Garcia, executive director of the Hoboken Housing Authority, has been selected for the “Achieving Excellence in Community Development program.”
The program is an 18-month education program for senior leaders in community organizations with a focus on affordable housing, community revitalization, or other community development endeavors. It is conducted in conjunction with Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.
The program includes three formal sessions at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, as well as executive coaching, peer learning, and guidance. The sessions will begin in early September, and will be spread out until spring 2014.
20th Annual National Night Out scheduled for Aug. 7
The 20th Annual National Night Out events will take place in Hoboken on Tuesday, Aug. 7.
Hosted by Hoboken Police Chief Anthony P. Falco Sr., the event aims to heighten crime and drug awareness, generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police community partnership, and send a message to criminals to let them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
