A funeral service was held June 26 at the Monumental Baptist Church, Jersey City, for Grace Fluellen, 67, of Jersey City. She passed away June 18. Grace was predeceased by her husband, Kismet Burroughs. Grace worked as a librarian at A. Harry Moore School, CU, and for the JCBOE as a teacher for a short period of time. Grace was a steward and secretary of her branch for CWA Local 1031. She also worked at the Can Do, Head Start, and Neighborhood Youth Corps. from 1966 to 1970, helping the young. She taught and counseled students at the American Business Institute and Philips Business School in Jersey City. Grace was a sister of the Phi Delta Kappa Sorority, worked with the youth providing guidance and mentoring as they prepared for their future college education.
Grace was a lifetime member, and secretary, and served on the Executive Committee, The Freedom Fund Banquet Committee, The Cotillion Committee and an advisor as well for the Youth Groups, which were to her heart for the NAACP, Jersey City, New Jersey branch where she chaired many events and fundraisers. She was a member of the Urban League. Grace was also instrumental in the creation of the Afro Historical Museum in Jersey City. Although she was never a member of the Claremont Lafayette United Presbyterian Church, she served as a Youth Advisor with her best friends JoAnn (Nunery) and Matthew Butts. Grace has been a long time member of Monumental Baptist Church. She graduated from the State Teachers College and from St. Peters College.
She continued to be an inspiration to people throughout her life and touched the lives of those she loved and helping those in need. Grace had a stylish way of dressing. Everything was always appropriate for the occasion.
Grace was the daughter of the late Robert Fluellen and Arlena Strong Fluellen. Surviving to cherish Grace’s memory are her siblings, Roy Fluellen and Roberta Fluellen; sister in law, Lullita Fluellen and her children, grand and great; her niece, Diana Jeffery and her children and grandchild; Roy’s children, grand and great; sister in law, Dorothy Burroughs, nieces and nephews; and her close friend, Jacqueline Nunery; and a host of other relatives. She was also predeceased by her sisters, Frances F. Fluellen and Esther Harris; brothers Ulious and Richard Fluellen. Services arranged by the Jackson Funeral Residence, Jersey City.
