North Bergen scores big on High School Proficiency Assessment
North Bergen High School (NBHS) students increased both their Language Arts and Mathematics scores on the latest High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) standardized test over last year’s scores, according to new data released recently. North Bergen posted among the highest scores in both Hudson County and in its District Factor Group, a categorization of districts with similar characteristics.
“These scores reflect a collaborative effort made by our faculty and administration to identify problem areas and proactively address them, as well as the diligence of our students,” said North Bergen Superintendent of Schools Robert Dandorph. “It’s extremely gratifying to see everyone’s hard work pay off in the form of these impressive scores.”
Nearly 92 percent of NBHS students scored a passing grade for Language Arts while over 78 percent passed Mathematics. Those scores outperform nearly every other public school in Hudson County as well as many suburban districts in Bergen County and throughout the state.

Arrest follows party
Ricardo Gallardo, 18, of Jersey City, has been charged with stabbing a Union City resident several times with a box cutter, according to a police report. The alleged incident occurred on Saturday, June 9 at 3:40 a.m. outside a North Bergen home on 78th Street near Bergenline Avenue.
Detective Robert Scudieri confirmed that Xavier Corcoran, the alleged victim, and Gallardo exchanged words during the party which led to the alleged fight. Gallardo is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a weapon and unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently held at the Hudson County jail in Kearny on $75,000 bail.
Detective Edgar Mendez responded to the police call and said that Barbara Herandez, a 20-year-old Fairview resident who was attempting to break up the fight, was allegedly cut. Corcoran and Hernandez were taken to Jersey City Medical Center. Corcoran is in stable condition while Hernandez was treated for lacerations to her hand, according to police.
The box cutter allegedly used during the fight was been retrieved by police.
Division of Fire Safety donates fire detectors to NHRFR
On June 13, representatives of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety were at North Hudson Regional Fire and Rescue (NHRFR) Headquarters, 11 Port Imperial Blvd. in West New York, to announce the donation of hundreds of fire detectors for residents of Guttenberg, North Bergen, Union City, Weehawken and West New York.
NHRFR firefighters will distribute the detectors to residents focusing mainly on senior citizens, lower-income residents and households with children.
Formed in 1998, NHRFR is one of the country’s largest regional fire departments, encompassing the municipalities of Guttenberg, North Bergen, Union City, Weehawken and West New York.
North Bergen shock jock gets jolted to Newark halfway house
Harold Turner, the former Internet radio shock jock and former FBI informant convicted of threatening federal judges on his blog, was released Monday to finish his sentence at a halfway house in New Jersey, according to a report on NorthJersey.com.
Turner served more than a year in a federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind., in a highly restrictive Communications Management Unit whose purpose is to monitor convicted terrorists along with other extremists. He is scheduled to finish his sentence on Oct. 6.
He was sentenced to 33 months in prison in December 2010 after being found guilty of threatening to assault and murder three judges of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit in Chicago, during his third trial. His first two trials ended in hung juries.
Turner’s blog post back in June 2009 called the judges “traitors to the Constitution” and said that they “deserved to die” for having local gun bans. He and his attorneys argued that his comments were protected under the First Amendment.
