Tonight in Secaucus: Relay for Life

SECAUCUS – Secaucus residents and friends are getting ready to stay up all night for the annual Relay for Life event that benefits cancer research.
A number of activities are planned for the evening, which starts with opening ceremonies at 6 p.m.at the Secaucus Recreation Center. Relay traditionally begins with a Survivors Lap when survivors are invited to circle a track together. Registration begins at 4 p.m., a survivor dinner is at 7 p.m. followed by a the Luminaria ceremony at 10 p.m, where the participants honor people who have had cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease.
Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence. The evening also includes swimming and movies.
