HUDSON COUNTY AND BEYOND — Are men really that disgusting?
This year, aside from the usual (perhaps sexist?) Father’s Day cards about fishing, sports, power tools, and grilling, there’s a new theme gaining space – flatulence and poop.
In Hoboken alone last week, the uptown Rite Aid displayed two Father’s Day cards with “pull my finger” gas jokes, and a card that was actually a book about using the toilet.
CVS also served up some stinky-themed greetings with one card saying “How to Pass Gas” on the outside and emitting sound effects when one opened it. A “Family Guy” card said family members had learned the answer to an important question about Dad: “Which way to lean when I fart.” Another fetid Father’s Day card said inside, “Father’s Day Fun? Let it rip!”
Slightly less scatological and perhaps out of date was an Al Bundy card featuring the famous TV father with his hand in his pants under the words “TV to watch, burgers to eat, itches to scratch.”
Over in ShopRite was as card telling us that if you mix up the letters in FATHER’S DAY, you get “he farts day!” Aha, that ought to tell us something!
So are women more dainty about bathroom habits, or are the card makers off base? And is this trend new, or does it go back as far as dad’s hole-filled socks?
American Greetings – the company that is responsible for the three cards at Rite Aid – put out a press release this year saying, “On Father’s Day consumers want to express their love and appreciation for dad in a playful way that is still heartfelt. Achieving this balance requires conversational sentiments that are based on the experiences and memories that have shaped the relationship.”
Pop, remember that time during the soccer game when you ate sauerkraut and stank up Secaucus?
The company had not returned a press call for further comment as of Friday afternoon.
Besides the themed cards, there was also an assortment of poems and pats on the back. Dad is rad!
So get to your local card store before this Sunday if you want the best crack at stinky and non-stinky selections. And to read more about Hoboken, Secaucus, fathers, and New Jersey, click Hudsonreporter.com for the Hudson Reporter newspaper group.
