Be proud, graduates

To the Editor:
This week many Bayonne students will graduate from schools all over town. The achievement of graduation is not only a milestone, but it also signifies a transition period. It is the completion of an academic stage and the beginning of a new stage. This time of year always leads me to reflect upon my own graduations here in Bayonne. I can remember my kindergarten graduation with such clarity that I even recall my line: “My cup of tea.” I practiced repeatedly to make sure I got it just right, because Mrs. O’Connor taught me to value graduations. I then went on to graduate from eighth grade and then from Bayonne High School. My Bayonne public school education and the numerous amazing teachers I had prepared me for a bachelor’s degree, two master’s degrees, and a doctoral degree.
My schooling also introduced me to my best friend, who I met when I was in the second grade at Horace Mann, and who I continue a close friendship with to this day. A few years later I met two other close friends who are still an important part of my life. These life-long friends have given me love and support through grief, sickness, accomplishments, heartbreaks, frequent flyer miles, and of course several graduations. While in high school, I sat with these friends at the window seat of McDonald’s talking about our futures. We could not have known our career paths and the direction life would take us, but we knew we were prepared for life’s challenges.
When I moved to California for graduate school, I was excited to live the California lifestyle. I guess I thought I would be studying on a surfboard in the Pacific. With comprehensive exams, my doctoral paper, and an internship, there was little time for the beach. Instead, I utilized the academic focus and discipline learned in grammar school to balance all the challenges of graduate school. Although it was not easy, I was equipped with the tools I needed to get through. I know that I am no different than the Class of 2012, who will also go on to face both life and academic or vocational challenges. I encourage the graduates, their families, and friends to support each other and to find balance in life. I also encourage the graduating class of 2012 to be proud of their Bayonne public school education, because I know that I am.
