Dear Editor:
I write to thank reporter Gennarose Pope for her masterfully crafted 5/27 article, “Glory, war, and Luck.” I am humbled by her unique talent, colorful turn of phrase, intelligence, sensitivity, and objectivity demonstrated in the article. Dr. Luck has been dead many years and no one visits his plaint military grave stone in Flower Hill cemetery. What he accomplished in July 1863, forgotten. He is not alone. In Union City, the names of those who made the supreme sacrifice are engraved on civic monuments for WW I and II. But not so for those Union soldiers and sailors of the Civil War. Without a name on a plaque, they are lost to history and unknown to us. Let’s consider erecting next to the Civil War monument in Ellsworth Park, a wall of remembrance of names—100 who hailed from old Union Hill, not counting old West Hoboken—to the memory of those such as Dr. Luck. I hope that the Union City Historical and Preservation Advisory Committee will take up this worthy cause.
