To the Editor:
To the person that is trapping cats on 50th Street between Broadway and Avenue C (you know who you are): I’m trying to understand why you are trapping cats and dumping them in other neighborhoods. It’s not only cruel but unfair and I will explain why. The cats you are trapping are being cared for by certain people and I, for one, am very worried about the cat you trapped and took away on Friday, May 4. Her name is Ana and she has been around for many years, and does not know any other neighborhood. I am afraid of something happening to her.
What about the cat that you trapped last year and dumped in Jersey City? That was cruel to the cat and unfair to the folks living there.
Cats are part of a colony and once you remove a cat from its colony, you make room for another to come in. In other words, you just made room for more cats to come around.
Do you think you are doing the right thing by dumping a problem in another neighborhood? Is that fair to the folks that live where you are dumping the cats?
The problem that we have with the cats can be taken care of if we all, as neighbors, get involved and address the problem. It’s a program called TNR: trap, neuter, release. And it works. I myself have been involved and I have had three cats spayed or neutered so there are no new kittens. Please get involved instead of trapping the cats and dumping them in other neighborhoods. That is not a solution.
