Marist High School has announced that three members of the Class of 2012 have earned acceptances to Ivy League universities. Thea John, Navidra Hardin, and Paige Morris have secured admission from Cornell University, Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia University, and Brown University.
Thea John received acceptances from Cornell, Princeton, and U-Penn, schools that only accept 18 percent, nine percent, and 14 percent of their applicants, respectively. John said, “I applied to all of them, hoping one would take me. Part of me felt like I had a good chance, but part of me felt like I had no chance. I was in-between.”
Senior Navidra Hardin obtained a spot in Columbia’s Class of 2016. The university accepts just 10 percent of its undergraduate applications, so the competition was stiff. “I was skeptical about applying,” said Navidra. “When I did, I didn’t tell anyone. I kept it a very well-hidden secret.”
Paige Morris was one of the lucky few admitted to Brown, a school that accepted only five percent of its applicants this year. Morris said, “I honestly can’t believe it. Brown received nearly 29,000 applications, and I was one of the 1,500 selected for the Class of 2016. The chances of this happening were so slim. I’d been told that I probably wouldn’t get in, so I almost didn’t apply. But now I am elated I did.”
While Hardin remains undecided, John is heading to Cornell and Morris will be attending Brown in the fall.
