HOBOKEN — The Hoboken City Council will meet Wednesday night at 7 p.m. for a possible adoption of the 2012 municipal budget. This budget is one of three components that determines the quarterly taxes that residents pay. The other two components are the annual county budget and the school budget.
The budget was amended earlier this month to include roughly $450,000 for the payment of city bills, which sparked a debate earlier this month.
According to a memo from Mayor Dawn Zimmer to the council, this calendar year budget reduces the tax levy by $900,000 from last year, and maintains a 3.6 percent tax surplus.

The council is also expected to vote on a resolution accepting a grant for a fire boat for safety reasons.
“With thousands of Hoboken residents taking ferries every day,” said Zimmer in the memo, “I believe we have an obligation to be in a position to assist our residents if there is an accident, as well as provide assistance in the event of a disaster in the region.”
“Chief Bloom has assured me that the addition of the fire boat will not increase staffing requirement,” Zimmer continued in the memo.
Zimmer also said in the memo that the fire boat will be decommissioned if the staffing requirements are increased and it becomes too difficult for the City to fund the boat on an annual basis.
