Hoboken to proceed with demolition of building at First and Jackson streets

HOBOKEN — The city will begin the process of remediation and partial demolition of the fire-damaged property at First and Jackson streets, a restaurant formerly known as Nardine’s, after a court decision yesterday, according to city spokesman Juan Melli. The owner of the property had challenged the plan and delayed the ability of the city to step in and conduct the demolition.
The fire displaced five residents of a two story-building last December.
The city had previously hired engineers to examine the structure and assess the extent of the damage, according to Melli. The engineers had determined that that the second floor suffered major damage and needed to be demolished.
The owner did not complete the work in the allotted time, and subsequently challenged the city in court over the demolition, according to a release sent from Melli.
