West 10th Street fire injures one firefighter and displaces one resident

BAYONNE — A fireman who complained of head and neck injuries resulting from fighting a fire at 92 W. 10th Street on Monday, March 19, was taken to Bayonne Medical Center and later released.
Fire fighters responded to the blaze just before 9 p.m. to find flames blowing out from two windows on the east side of the first floor.
The building was a two-story residential wood frame dwelling. Firefighters forced entry into the building and extinguished a fire on the first floor in the living room, which was fully engulfed in flame. The first floor bedroom also suffered from fire damage, and the remaining structure was impacted by smoke and water damage. One male occupant was home at the time of the fire, and reportedly witnessed an orange glow from the living room. It was further reported that the occupant attempted to extinguish a fire in the couch using a tub of water, but was forced out of the building, with his cat, by the uncontrollable flames. The Fire Investigator determined that the fire originated in the living room, and was the result of a failed electrical cord that was supplying a space heater.
The building occupant was displaced due to the heavy damage within the structure, and sought shelter with a family member. The fire was declared under-control within an hour.
The Fire Department, Police Department, EMS, and Building Departments were at the scene. – Al Sullivan
