One-alarm fire smokes out meat section of Weehawken supermarket

A one-alarm fire broke out in the meat section of the Weehawken Pathmark at 3 a.m. Monday morning after an electrical supply cable shorted and set a stack of Styrofoam meat trays on fire, North Hudson Regional Fire Director Jeff Welz said Monday.
The smoke from the burning Styrofoam set off the sprinkler system, which contained the fire until the fire department arrived and put out the remaining fire, he added.
“There wasn’t a lot of damage to the area, but it generated a lot of smoke because the Styrofoam is petroleum-based,” Welz said.
He added, “In this case the smoke did more damage than the actual fire. The good news is there was no major structural damage. The sprinklers did what they’re designed to do, and the department reacted quickly.”
The supermarket re-opened Monday afternoon.

Les Paul and Mary Ford tribute moved from library to senior nutrition center

The Weehawken Free Public Library will host musicians Tom Doyle and Sandy Cory in a musical tribute to Les Paul and Mary Ford on Monday, March 19 at 7 p.m. Because of the enthusiastic response, the concert will be moved from the library to the Senior Nutrition Center, located at 201 Highwood Ave.
