‘Show your support’

To the Editor:
Nearly 200 young boxers are busy preparing for the 2012 New Jersey Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Tournament. These athletes are hoping to compete in the nation’s most prestigious amateur boxing tournament, the National Golden Gloves, to be held in Mesquite, Nev., this spring. But first, the boxers must participate in preliminary rounds, to be held in various New Jersey cities over the next several weeks, ending with the state finals at the Prudential Center on April 7.
The NJGG has been promoting the sport of amateur boxing since the mid 1930s and sending promising young boxers to the national competition.
Many of our participants come from unforgiving environments, where it is all too easy to lose their way. Boxing clubs that provide low-cost training programs are a safe haven, keeping these youths in the gym and off the streets. Even those who don’t have their hearts set on Golden Gloves glory learn to work hard to achieve a worthy goal.
When I became state organization president in June, I installed a new board of directors who share my vision for the state’s amateur boxing community and motivating our athletes. We set up a scholarship fund for our most promising athletes because not only should these kids be fighting for a trophy but also for a shot at an education.
Please show your support by attending one of our shows, sponsoring an event or making a donation to the New Jersey Golden Gloves Scholarship Fund.
