Hoboken council meets Wednesday – watch it here LIVE; Issues:2012 city budget to be introduced; vote on Soares’ board appointment

HOBOKEN — The Hoboken City Council will meet Wednesday at 7 p.m. in City Hall to discuss various issues. Of note, the city will vote to introduce its proposed 2012 budget. This budget is one of three components that determines the quarterly taxes that residents pay. The other two components are the annual county budget (usually voted on by the county freeholders in June) and the school budget (usually approved each March or April by the school board).
The last 12-month Hoboken budget was $101.7 million, passed last March.
Whether the new budget will lower, raise, or stabilize taxes will depend on how many property owners are contributing to the tax levy and the assessed value of the property; watch for future stories in the Reporter.
A public hearing and final vote on the budget will be held at two successive meetings in April. The budget can be cut, amended, or increased during this process, and several departmental workshops have been scheduled.

Also at the meeting…

Also at the meeting, the city will vote on various appointments to boards, including an appointment for former Councilman Tony Soares to the North Hudson Sewerage Authority. Soares was first appointed to that board in July of 2010, which sparked a rare public dissention among the most vocal supporters of Mayor Dawn Zimmer. Soares was already on the Zoning Board at the time, and Zimmer felt that one person should not be on two boards. But some allies of both Zimmer and Soares felt there was no problem with the appointment.
