Development vs. preservation

North Bergen and Guttenberg have access to some of the most stellar views in the county. But the two densely populated towns have always attempted to juggle sustainable development with preserving the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape.
Whether it’s the potential blocking of the Manhattan skyline views, or the excavating the Palisades Cliffs, recent development proposals have led to protests from residents concerned over the surrounding landmarks. Some residents have argued that development has gone too far, taking away from the beauty and aesthetic value of the Palisades hills.
Others, however, claim that the developments bring in new ratables, and cause more benefit to the area rather than harm. Indeed, many of these developments bring in interest due to their close proximity to the natural landmarks.
Several proposed developments currently being heard by town and county boards require the excavation of the Palisades Cliffs. Some residents and activists – such as the Coalition to Preserve the Palisades – have charged that these developments are removing portions of a 250 million year-old landmark. Developers contend that the actual removal of rock is minimal and ultimately beneficial to the surrounding township as a whole.
Environmental activists have complained that some developments, like Riverview, a proposed development with views of the Hudson River, would be better off not built so the land can be used for a park. But North Bergen and Guttenberg recently agreed to construct their own 1.5-acre park on River Road along the waterfront. It is expected to be completed by fall.
Perhaps most endearing to local environmental activists is the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway, a state-mandated path from Bayonne to the George Washington Bridge to which each waterfront developer must add, by law. There are still small parcels to be filled in.
The attached pictures demonstrate the careful link between development and preservation. What do you think of North Bergen and Guttenberg’s balance between development and natural preservation?
