Fire leaves vacant Weehawken residence extensively damaged; officials investigating electrical permits

WEEHAWKEN — A two-alarm fire broke out in the basement of a vacant one-family Weehawken home at 476 Gregory Ave. early Thursday morning and two firefighters sustained minor injuries, according to NJ.com. It was put out by 7 p.m.
“We’re still investigating but it looks like the origin of the fire was electrical in nature,” North Hudson Regional Fire Director Director Jeff Welz said Friday. The house was under renovation, and the residents had moved their belongings into the basement, “so there were a lot of combustibles,” he continued.
Officials believe the fire started in the basement electrical panel, spread to the basement’s contents, and up through walls, leaving extensive damage to the building. Construction officials are scheduled to determine the viability of the building today, and also to investigate whether there were proper permits for the electrical work being done, Welz said. –Gennarose Pope
