The closing of A&P

To the Editor:
I am very sorry to hear that the A&P down on North Street will be closed due to bankruptcy problems. I think that this was the cleanest supermarket that we had in Bayonne. It also had the nicest personnel. The store was also very handy. I can remember when we had three supermarkets in downtown Bayonne – ShopRite, Fourth and Ave. C; Pagano, North Street; A&P, 12th St. and Broadway. I can even remember when A&P was on Ninth Street and Avenue C, and a small one on Fourth and Avenue C. Since I was a young lad in the 1950s, I can always remember an A&P in Bayonne.
Now we will not have one supermarket in downtown. I know that this will cause an undue hardship to senior citizens in downtown, especially those who don’t have private transportation. I hope that the public officials in Bayonne (mayor, councilmen, councilwomen and public safety director) will address this problem and they will find a way of filling this void.
