HOBOKEN MAYOR ZIMMER TO MTV: ‘Jersey Shore’ filming here would be ‘degrading’ to quality of life; permit for spinoff denied

HOBOKEN AND BEYOND – It looks like Snooki and “The Situation” won’t be found partying in Hoboken as part of a reality TV show any time soon.
With rumors swirling around that a “Jersey Shore” spinoff will be filmed in Hoboken or Jersey City, Mayor Dawn Zimmer announced in a memo to the City Council on Tuesday that the city denied a permit request from MTV to film publicly in the mile-square city.
“Based on protecting public safety and quality of life concerns for Hoboken residents, the city has denied a film permit for a spin-off of the Jersey Shore to be filmed in public locations,” Zimmer said in the memo. “Please see the attached letters which explain the reasons for this decision. The applicant has been advised that they do have a right to appeal the Film Commission’s decision to the City Council.”
Zimmer said in the letter that the filming of the show would be “unnecessarily degrading [to residents’] quality of life.”
The mayor was involved in another recent quality of life decision to cut down on extreme partying in the city. Her administration wanted the 2012 Hoboken St. Patrick’s Parade moved from a Saturday to a Wednesday. The parade committee refused to budge, and they canceled the event for this year.
Other reality shows have filmed in town, including “Cake Boss” and parts of “The Real Housewives of New Jersey,” although the latter is filed mostly in an apartment when it’s here.
