HOBOKEN AND BEYOND – Despite a newspaper article that says the Hoboken St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee will look for a new location for their annual celebration this year, Parade Committee Spokesperson Bill Coughlin maintained Friday afternoon that the parade for 2012 is cancelled and won’t be held anywhere.
An NJ.com story quotes Coughlin as saying the parade committee will make a decision “in about a week or two” about where to host the parade this year, adding that the committee has received “a great response” from parade organizers across the state.
But when reached by phone Friday, Coughlin had something different to say. He said the parade was still canceled for 2012, and that the current position of the committee is on their website.
Hoboken traditionally held a St. Patrick’s Day Parade on the first Saturday in March, in order to attract better bands that would usually go to New York City or other cities on March 17.
After many arrests and two sexual assault allegations during the day-long party in March 2011, Mayor Dawn Zimmer said she would only approve a parade for a weekday. In response, the committee cancelled the parade. This year would have been the 26th annual parade. – Ray Smith
