Sen. Stack supports proposal for Liberty Health System to acquire Christ Hospital

UNION CITY, JERSEY CITY, AND BEYOND — State Senator Brian Stack (D-33), whose district includes Jersey City Heights where Christ Hospital is located, came out in support of a proposal Friday for Liberty Health System (which owns the non-profit Jersey City Medical Center) to acquire Christ Hospital.

In a press release, Stack said, “Christ Hospital is a nonprofit community asset that employs hundreds of local residents and offers acute care hospital services to patients, regardless of their ability to pay. Furthermore, it has traditionally been an in-network hospital that accepts insurance.”

Stack urged Christ Hospital’s board to approve the proposal.

However, Christ has been in negotiations to sell the facility to a private company from California. That company would likely turn it from non-profit to for-profit.

Stack said, “I respectfully urge the Attorney General and the Commissioner of the Department of Health to compel Christ’s board to conduct an open and transparent process to select the right buyer, consistent with our community’s needs and in accordance with the Community Health Care Assets Protection Act. This should be done with the oversight of local elected officials, community stakeholders, union and workforce representatives, and trusted members of the medical community under the guidance of the Attorney General to ensure there are no irregularities.”
