Murals painted on PS #5

There is a mural that is painted on the side of Public School # 5 located at 182 Merseles Street in Jersey City. It was painted on August 14, 1945, the day World War II ended. This mural, a tribute to those who fought in the war, was painted by Andrew Guzzi, Jr., Anthony Coiffi, Jr., and Paul Marlu Maiellaro.
As time passed, memorials for Korea and Vietman Wars were also added. Since the day it was first painted, Paul continues to faithfully watch over the memorial and with assistance restore it as needed. He is a Korean War veteran. He is currently employed as a security guard at a neighboring school in Jersey City. His brother, Michael Maiellaro, was wounded in Korea and received a Purple Heart. He feels it is important to recognize and honor his brother and fellow veterans. Thom Cappoli and him are pictured standing in front of the memorial which is dedicated to the veterans of World War II, The Korean War and The Vietman War. Thom Cappoli restores the mural from time to time in order to preserve it. The mural has been honoring veterans for nearly sixty-six years.
