BAYONNE — At its Jan. 18 meeting, the Bayonne city council was expected to approve a contract for driving piles for construction of a new $4 million firehouse. The firehouse would replace the tent that the department currently uses to house fire vehicles servicing the Route 440 area.
City officials said the final contracts for construction are expected to be awarded in February with work on firehouse itself beginning as early as April 1.
The five-bay South Harbor Firehouse, which is located at the foot of the former Military Ocean Terminal, would cover a wider range of area and replace older facilities which can not handle the larger rigs that are currently standard for fire operations.
