PAKIDIS, THOMAS

Family and friends celebrated the life of Thomas Pakidis on Jan. 7 at The Mount Sinai Gospel Church, Jersey City. He died on Nov. 27 at Christ Hospital from complications following a heart attack. Tom is survived by his sister Claire Faber of Colonia, New Jersey and brothers Nick Pakidis of Tampa, Florida and George Pakidis of Fairfax, Virginia.
A lifelong resident of Jersey City and known by many as the Mayor of The Junction, Pakidis was known best for his commitment to the community and his willingness and ability to get involved in civic matters. He was a community activist whose writings could often be found as full page ads in The Jersey Journal either as open letters to the editor, politicians or the community, expressing his thoughts and opinions.
Born at Margaret Hague Hospital, Tom grew up in the Greenville section of Jersey City. While working in the family business, Tom earned both his bachelor’s degree from Seton Hall University and master’s degree from St. Peter’s College. He became both a real estate and insurance broker and formed Peacock Realty. In addition to real estate and insurance Tom was the owner of the Junction Lounge, a community tavern that served as a gathering spot for locals. He will also be remembered by many of the Junction residents for his traditional holiday music and festivities while he sold Christmas trees to area residents. In addition to a fifty year successful business career Pakidis will be remembered most for his commitment to the Bergen/Lafayette community and its youth. He was president of the Jersey City Boys Club in the late 60’s when it was located on Ash St. in the Lafayette Section. He served as vice president of the Hudson County Council of Social Agencies and was recognized by The Aibonito Fraternity for his assistance to the local Hispanic community. One of his most memorable efforts as the President of the Boy’s Club, was his encouragement and support of a group of young aspiring musicians. These musicians went on to become the world famous “Kool and the Gang.” Services arranged by the Leber Funeral Home, Union City.
