Alleged robbers of October poker game being sought

The Bayonne police are looking for three men armed with handguns and a metal pipe who forced their way into an Avenue C poker game on Oct. 28 and made off with more than $10,000 in cash, jewelry, and cellular phones.
Two of the men, whom the police said who may be Hispanic, had handguns. The third, who may have been African-American, had a pipe. They pushed their way into a game at a home on Avenue C at about 1:35 a.m. and made off with the proceeds, police said.
Lt. Rob Geisler said surveillance cameras inside and outside the building captured images of the suspects, but the police have not been able to get any leads and are asking for anyone to call with a tip.
“We’re looking for some leads,” he said. “We’d like to find someone who can identify them.”
All three suspects are believed to be between the ages of 18 and 25. The police said the first suspect is about 5’2” to 5’3” with a light to fair complexion and is wearing a New York Yankees hat.
The second suspect is also light to fair in complexion with a medium build and about 5’5” to 5’8” in height. He was wearing a hat with a red brim, a hood, and a black jacket.
The third suspect is also a medium build but with a darker complexion, light facial hair, and about 5’5” to 5’8” in height. He was wearing a black zipper jacket with long sleeves.
Geisler said the suspects arrived while the poker game was going on.
“Typically, one guy goes up to the door and knocks, and then when the door opens they all rush in,” he said. “They took the money and then beat it out of there.”

Police foil apparent suicide attempt

In a coordinated effort, two police officers were able to rescue a 45-year-old Bayonne woman from the roof of a Kennedy Boulevard residence while two other officers talked to her to keep her from jumping during an incident shortly after 8 a.m. on Nov. 29.
The woman’s husband had called the police when she climbed out on to the roof, threatening to jump.
A police spokesperson said the officers in front of the building tried first to talk the woman down. When that failed, they kept her distracted while two other officers were able to pull her away from the edge.
She was transported to Bayonne Medical Center after the incident.

Juvenile crime spree?

Acting on a tip from someone who thought he saw two kids removing something from a car parked on 51st Street near Kennedy Boulevard, the Bayonne police arrested a 17-year-old Jersey City boy and a 15-year-old Bayonne boy for allegedly breaking into at least three parked vehicles in that part of the city on Nov. 23.
Acting on a description given to them, the police stopped two boys near 51st Street and found that they had in their possession a number of items that were later said to have been taken from three or more cars – including a laptop computer allegedly removed from a car that was parked behind a locked gate.
A spokesperson for the police said that the 15-year-old was in possession of the laptop in addition to several jewelry items, a cellphone charger, ear phones, flashlight, pocket knife, and $77.46 in cash.
The 17-year-old had a global tracking device, a flask, a cellphone, a wine bottle opener, and slightly more than $10 in change.
The police said some of the items appear to have come from three vehicles parked on 51st Street, including a tan four-door Volvo, which was parked behind a locked fence.
The 15-year-old was charged with resisting arrest after he refused to be handcuffed.
Each boy was charged with three counts of burglary, three counts of theft, and one count of criminal trespassing.

Car stop leads to drug arrest

Robert Barbarise, 38, of Old Bridge, was charged with possession of a hypodermic needle as well as drug paraphernalia after police performed a routine motor vehicle stop near the Exxon Station on Avenue E on Nov. 25, according to a police spokesperson.
The spokesperson said the officers found that there was an outstanding warrant for the owner of the vehicle for $500 from Old Bridge – and determined that the passenger in the vehicle, Barbarise, was the owner.
The police said Barbarise allegedly told them he was someone else – and was later charged with hindering apprehension.
When he reached into the glove compartment to produce the car registration, the police said they saw a hypodermic needle and later found three empty plastic bags typically used for heroin.

Lack of lights leads to arrest

The Bayonne police pulled over a car near 63rd Street for allegedly driving without lights at about 11 p.m. on Nov. 26.
A police spokesperson said when the police approached the vehicle they saw three men inside the car, all of whom allegedly had open 40-ounce cans of beer between their legs.
The driver, Freddie Figueroa, 37, of Bayonne, was found to have an outstanding warrant for $81 for unpaid tickets from Carteret.
One of the passengers, Harold Vargas, 41, of Bayonne, allegedly had a marijuana cigarette in his possession. All three men received summons for having open containers of alcohol in the vehicle. Figueroa was given a summons for driving with a suspended license, and another for driving without lights.
Vargas was charged with possession of marijuana.
