NORTH BERGEN — Yadira Torres, 26, of Hartford, Connecticut, pleaded guilty two counts of second-degree manslaughter and single counts of reckless driving and driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol on Tuesday in Superior Court in Stamford, according to the Stamford Advocate. The plea agreement calls for five to eight years in prison.
Torres had been driving a rented car on Highway 95 near Darien, Conn. at approximately 6 a.m. on May 7. She was returning from a Manhattan nightclub after a night of drinking. Her car struck a tractor-trailer, causing it to flip over and burst into flames. James A. Sorto, 42, North Bergen, was the driver, and Kelly Taborda, 18, of North Bergen, Sorto’s passenger, both died in the crash. State police told the media that Taborda was pregnant at the time.
