Weehawken burglaries have stopped; police still investigating
Five homes were burglarized between Fulton Street and El Dorado Place in Weehawken over a 10-day period that ended on Oct. 7. Weehawken Police Chief Jeff Welz reported Friday that there have been no further burglaries since that time, but that the investigation is still open.
Police made two arrests following the burglaries. One of the suspects had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Elizabeth, N.J. and an extensive criminal background, and is currently under further investigation. The other also had an extensive criminal background, including a method of burglary similar to the five recently committed.
Chief Welz reported that they had collected fingerprints from the burglarized residences, but the prints returned no matches when entered into the system.
He also stated that the police are maintaining increased patrols in the area, and requested that locals remain vigilant. “Our best eyes and ears are our residents,” he said.
Hudson County polls open Tuesday, Nov. 8
Voters throughout Hudson County will go to the polls on Nov. 8 to elect a number of county and state officeholders. The positions up for grabs are county executive, county register, three state Senate seats, all six state Assembly seats, and all nine Board of Freeholder seats. Only two of the freeholders face competition this time around.
The most prominent countywide election this November will see County Executive Thomas DeGise, a Democrat, facing Republican Stephen DeLuca for a four-year term as county executive.

Weehawken to celebrate Veterans Day
Weehawken will hold a ceremony honoring its veterans at the Soldier and Sailor’s Monument in Hamilton Park on Boulevard East at 11 a.m. on Fri., Nov. 11. Refreshments will be served following the ceremony at the Senior Nutrition Center at 201 Highwood Ave.
Also, Waddell & Reed’s “Honoring Our History” traveling World War I exhibition will make its 23rd stop on a national 75-city tour on Nov. 11. The exhibit will be held in the parking lot of UBS Financial Services at 1200 Harbor Blvd. from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Weehawken academic competition to air next week
Weehawken High School’s Academic Team competed in the televised Madison Square Garden (MSG) Varsity Challenge at their studio in New York City on Wed., Oct. 26. The show will air on the MSG Varsity Channel, Cablevision channel 14, at 6:30 p.m. on Tues., Nov. 8.
MSG Varsity encouraged schools across the tri-state area to enter in a drawing and Weehawken was randomly selected to participate.
High school senior Will Lenchus (the captain of the team) and sophomores Matty Callahan, Pearl Lee, and Jack Skuller competed against Paramus Catholic and lost 360 to 235, but still had a great time, advisor Al Cevoli and assistant advisor Jon Hammer said.
New Weehakwen waterfront condo breaks ground
Lennar Urban and Roseland Property Company broke ground on a new luxury condominium building on the Hudson River waterfront on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The four-story, 36-residence building with direct skyline views will add to Henley on Hudson, the preexisting upscale neighborhood of brownstones and condos in Port Imperial.
The building provides one, two, and three-bedroom housing ranging from 912 to 1,722 sq. ft., complete with balconies and terraces, parking spaces and garage storage. Initial occupancy is scheduled for 2013.
Free lunchtime waterfront jazz concert to be held on Wednesday
Dorado Schmitt and the Django All-Stars are taking a detour from their national tour in France to perform jazz in the style of legends Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 12:30 p.m. on Weehawken’s waterfront.
The Hudson Riverfront Performing Arts Center presents this series of free lunchtime concerts in the Atrium at 1000 Harbor Boulevard in Weehawken.

Weehawken Woman’s Club to hold annual fall fundraiser
The Woman’s Club of Weehawken will hold its Annual Fall Fundraiser at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6 at the Weehawken Elks Lodge located at 50th Street and Boulevard East.
This year’s theme is “Rockin’ the ’60s.” Food, raffles and music will be provided by “Finish This.” All proceeds from the event go to benefit local charities.

Local author to appear at library
Weehawken resident James Dette, author of “The Tree in Calle Sulaco,” will appear at Weehakwen Public Library, 49 Hauxhurst Ave., on Wed., Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Dette worked as an officer for the American Institute for Free Labor Development, helping Ecuadorian trade unions with loans and other projects, which served as inspiration for his book.
He dedicates his novel to “the unsung Latin American union and cooperative leaders and North American missioners and workers in the various aid organizations who have been murdered in their struggle for justice.”

Firefighters teach Webster school students fire safety
Firefighter Dave Flood and volunteers from the North Hudson Firefighters Association visited Daniel Webster School on Oct. 11 to teach children how they can keep themselves and their families safe in the event of a fire.
The firefighters staged a puppet show to emphasize fire safety. They showed students how to crawl low on the ground to avoid smoke inhalation, and to “stop, drop and roll” in case their clothes catch fire.
Students proceeded to the school yard where the firefighters demonstrated their equipment, brought them onto their fire engine, and taught them how to use a fire hose. Each child also received a firefighter’s helmet as a souvenir.
Advanced Physical Medicine Center holds Thanksgiving food drive
The Advanced Physical Medicine Center of Fairview has announced the launch of its 19th annual Thanksgiving food drive to benefit the Fairview welfare department. Donations of non-perishable food items will be collected from Tuesday, Nov. 1 through Tuesday, Nov. 15 at the Advanced Physical Medicine Center at 222 Bergen Blvd. in Fairview.
“We urge local residents to contribute whatever they can to this worthy cause by donating non-perishable food including canned and dry goods such as vegetables, soup, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and stuffing mix,” said Dr. Arber, clinical director of the Advanced Physical Medicine Center. “During these tough economic times, this is one small way to make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who need it most.”
