Weehawken burglaries have stopped; police still investigating

WEEHAWKEN — Five homes were burglarized between Fulton Street and El Dorado Place in Weehawken over a 10-day period that ended on Oct. 7. Weehawken Police Chief Jeff Welz reported Friday that there have been no further burglaries since that time, but that the investigation is still open.
Police made two arrests following the burglaries. One of the suspects had an outstanding warrant for his arrest from Elizabeth, N.J. and an extensive criminal background, and is currently under further investigation. The other also had an extensive criminal background, including a method of burglary similar to the five recently committed.
Chief Welz reported that they had collected fingerprints from the burglarized residences, but the prints returned no matches when entered into the system.
He also stated that the police are maintaining increased patrols in the area, and requested that locals remain vigilant. “Our best eyes and ears are our residents,” he said. – Gennarose Pope
