Beldini still fighting to be free

JERSEY CITY – Former Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini continues her fight to stay out of jail.
One of 46 public officials and religious leaders busted in the now-infamous 2009 Federal Bureau of Investigations sting known as Operation Bid Rig, Beldini was convicted last year of taking a $20,000 cash bribe from federal informant Solomon Dwek.
A federal judge sentenced her to three years behind bars, but Beldini has been trying to stay out of prison. Her attorney appealed her conviction, an appeal that was denied.
Beldini, 76, is now hoping poor health will prevent her from having to serve time. For months her attorney has hinted that his client is too frail and ill to serve three years.
According to a published report, her attorney on Monday filed a motion to block her incarceration, citing poor health as the reason she should be allowed to remain free.
