Police officer charged with DWI, report says
An off-duty police officer in Hoboken was charged with driving while intoxicated after he crashed his car on Clinton Street near Fifth Street on Oct. 12 at approximately 3:30 a.m., according to a report on NJ.com..
Officials from the Hoboken Police Department could not be immediately reached to confirm the details or the name of the officer.
The report states that the officer was placed on desk duty pending the outcome of the DWI charges. The vehicle ended up on its side after the crash, according to the report.
The report also states that police officers responding to the crash found several damaged cars in the area, and the off-duty officer was still inside his vehicle, which was on its side in the middle of the street.
Annual Hoboken Historical Museum House Tour scheduled for Oct. 23
On Sunday, Oct. 23, eight local homeowners and two historic buildings will open their doors to the public in the annual Hoboken House Tour, a fundraiser for the Hoboken Historical Museum. This year’s tour commemorates the Museum’s 25th anniversary by featuring several historic buildings, such as the Fire Department Museum, 213 Bloomfield St., and the former Norwegian church turned American Legion hall at 13th Street and Willow Avenue, now an architect’s office.
The self-guided tour takes about two to three hours on foot. Homes open at 10 a.m. and doors close at 4 p.m. All tours start from the Museum, but homes may be visited in any order. A map will be included in the House Tour booklet. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 the day of the tour (Museum members pay $25).
Tour goers can save time and money by buying a ticket voucher in advance at the Museum, 1301 Hudson St., or calling (201) 656-2240 to reserve tickets by credit card.
Other ticket sales outlets include Sparrow’s Wines & Liquors at 126 Washington St., Fleet Feet Sports, 604 Washington St., Amanda’s Restaurant, 908 Washington St., and Coldwell Banker Real Estate, 100 Washington St. The Museum validates for three hours of parking (if space is available) at the Littleman Parking Garage at 12th St. and Shipyard Lane.
Hoboken library to host day for seniors
The Hoboken Public Library invites all Hoboken seniors to a special senior day on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Activities will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The event will feature free catered food and a trivia contest about Hoboken with prizes and live entertainment. Music will be provided by special guest Taharga Patterson, an acoustic guitarist. Free transportation will be provided by the HOP shuttle bus. To RSVP, call (201) 420-2347.
Think Thursdays Series returns to Hudson School on Oct. 20
Scott Reitmeyer will be at The Hudson School (601 Park Ave.) on Oct. 20 from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. as part of the Think Thursdays Series, a lecture and film series aimed at adults.
Admission is $7 for THS family members and $10 for the general public.
Reitmeyer is an oral historian who discovered, in his Jersey City home, over 700 letters from William Sheridan, his wife’s grandfather, to her grandmother Marion, all written while William was a soldier serving in World War II. The letters detail William’s time serving overseas.
Other speakers from the Think Thursdays Series have included the oral historian Zoe West, authors Lisa Martineau, Marc Aronson, Marina Budhos, Deborah Clearman, Roya Movafegh, and chiropractor and wellness expert Dr. Laura Brayton.
Hoboken’s Our Lady of Grace and St. Joseph celebrates ‘300 years’
The Church of Our Lady of Grace and St. Joseph, formed in 2008 as one parish, marks twin anniversaries in 2011 totaling 300 years.
Founded in 1851, OLG is 160 years old, and St. Joseph is 140 years old. A special Mass will be celebrated in each church at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 13, followed by a dinner at the Casino in the Park. A dinner ticket is $65 for adults and $30 for children 12 and under.

NAMI Hudson County will hold educational courses
The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Hudson County is conducting an educational course for parents, caregivers, and adolescents living with mental illness. The topics will include ADHD, bipolar disorder, conduct disorder, major depression, and more. It will also focus on communication skills, problem solving, crisis preparation, and the biology of mental illness.
The free six-week course will commence Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Family Support Office in Jersey City. Classes will run from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and babysitting will be provided.

Bird walk in Liberty State Park
The Liberty State Park Interpretive Program will host a bird walk on Sat., Oct. 22 from 10 a.m. until noon. Participants can expect a leisurely stroll along the Hudson River walkway in search of winter visitors to Liberty State Park. Species that inhabit the area at this time of years include ruddy ducks, mergansers, grebes, and buffleheads. Guests are encouraged to dress warmly and to bring binoculars, if they own a pair. The park can provide a limited number of binoculars to guests who do not own any.
