Dear Editor:
As an advocate for Hudson County’s commuters and seniors, this morning I attended the NJ Transit Board meeting in Newark. I joined Councilman Ray Graeves (Bayonne) in calling for a speedy solution to this latest potential disruption of bus services in Hudson County. As chair of the NJ Transit’s citizens advisory board since 1989, this was not the first time I took the mike to promote commuter services not be slashed or fairs hiked. Hudson County recently bore the brunt of the Port Authority’s fare hikes. I was at that hearing also. Advocates have to stand up for people who are deeply impacted by a company’s actions – people simply need public transportation to get to work or shopping and seniors for medical appointments.
With Hudson County’s Senate and Assembly delegation, the Mayors of Bayonne and Jersey City and advocates such as I represent, New Jersey Transit has been working diligently on this issue since the private carrier Red and Tan announced the cutback last week. I was proud to stand in front of a board that truly cares about the commuters and resident of Hudson County. By the time this is printed I am confident that the solution will be announced and we will have one less thing to worry about.
