May we go forward unafraid

Dear Editor:
September 11, 2011 marks the 10th Anniversary of the horrific tragedy of the terrorist strike on the World Trade Center in New York City. It was a sad day for all and people have come to mark that day with moments of silence and prayers.
Commemoration of that day will be different for each of us particularly if a loved one was lost or injured. As well, firefighters, police, first responders and 9-11 volunteers will each reflect differently on the fateful events. Each year, The Salvation Army’s New Jersey Division has been a beacon for those affected by the tragedy. We are keenly aware of the lingering effects of 9-11. We pray for world peace and hope that closure will come to all those involved.
The Salvation Army was actively engaged in helping both victims and first responders within minutes of the tragedy. The New Jersey Division of The Salvation Army set up temporary shelters, feeding stations and pastoral counseling services. It played a major part in the Liberty State Park Family Assistance Center – set up a caseload office at divisional headquarters, ran warehousing operations for getting supplies into New York City, provided a mobile canteen at the NYC Coroner’s Office and helped in so many other ways.
My prayers go to those affected by 9-11. My thanks go to those who donated generously or volunteered their time so selflessly. May our world live in peace. May we go forward unafraid. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for thou art with me …The Bible, Psalm 23
