Burglary nets $20K in cash

The police say they are investigating a burglary of a two-family dwelling on Avenue E that occurred between 7:50 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Aug. 19, in which $20,000 in cash was reported missing.
The police responded to a complaint by the first floor resident who said someone had broken the lock on the door and made off with about $5,000 of electronic equipment. Police noticed the lock to the upstairs apartment was also broken. That resident reported the loss of $20,000 in cash.

Woman busted for possession of heroin

Tara Smith, 33, of Bayonne, was charged with possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia after a motor vehicle accident near Avenue C and Andrews Street on Aug. 21. A police spokesperson said Smith’s car hit another car stopped at the traffic light. Police said Smith’s speech was slurred and her eye pupils very small, suggesting the alleged use of drugs. Police said that after a search, they found a small bag of suspected heroin in her wallet, as well as a cut straw. Smith was also charged with DUI.

Needed a present

Henry Perkins III, 27, of Bayonne, was charged with theft after he allegedly grabbed a donation canister off the counter of Diamond Dog Groomers on Broadway. A police spokesperson said the clerk gave the police a description of the person, and a patrol car found Perkins on East 33rd Street. The police said Perkins told them he allegedly took the money to buy someone a birthday present. The can reportedly contained $9.24.

Theft charge

Lorenzo Staten, 38, of Bayonne, was charged with theft and violation of anti-piracy laws after he allegedly stole a bag from a Broadway deli while trying to sell suspected counterfeit adult videos on Aug. 24.
Lorenzo allegedly came into the deli trying to sell the videos, then allegedly picked up another person’s bag on the way out of the store. The bag contained personal papers and about $300 in cash, a police spokesperson said.
Acting on a description, police apprehended Staten near Broadway and 45th Street. He did not have the bag or its contents in his possession, but he did have nine DVDs police described as bootlegged adult videos, police said.

A rash of stolen vehicles

While police are hesitant to say that there is a connection, a number of vehicles were stolen in various parts of Bayonne during a short time frame.
At some point between 8 p.m. on Aug. 13 and 11:44 a.m. on Aug. 19, someone took a 2000 four-door silver Cadillac Seville from a car lot on Route 440 south.
At some point between 7 p.m. on Aug. 20 and 8:25 a.m. on Aug. 21, someone stole a 2001 beige Lincoln Continental from W. 20th Street. A police spokesperson said the victim claimed to have accidentally left the keys inside the vehicle.
Between Aug. 15 at 4 a.m. and Aug. 20 at 9:50 a.m., someone stole a black 2009 Harley Davidson Heritage motorcycle from in front of a residence on W. 52nd Street.
On Aug. 19 between 4 and 5:15 a.m., someone stole a red, white, and black Yamaha motorcycle from in front of Prospect Avenue property.
At some point between 11 p.m. on Aug. 18 and 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 19, someone stole a 2002 gold Kawasaki motorcycle from in front of a residence on Prospect Ave.
