HUDSON COUNTY — The sun returned and residents and officials in Hudson County’s towns began clearing trees and assessing damage left by Hurricane Irene on Monday. Monday morning, many windows still had tape from a storm that ended up packing slower winds than predicted, but still left thousands without power.
In Hoboken, the city delivered water to the housing projects, where power was out.
Newspapers reported one death in the county: A postal supervisor in Kearny who left his car, which was under two feet of water, and fell into 10-12 feet of water in a hidden drainage canal. A co-worker tried to save Ronald Dawkins, 47, of Orange, but could not. His body was found 100 yards away.
Also, in the early hours of Sunday morning, Hudson County sheriff’s officers pulled a 25-year-old Hoboken man out of the Hudson River. According to NJ.com, he at first claimed he was trying to save his friend, but then admitted he was a “thrill seeker,” the article said.
