A funeral mass was offered Aug. 12 at St. Paul the Apostle Church for Thomas J. Connors Jr., 80. He died Aug. 9 at Christ Hospital, Jersey City. Born in New York City, the son of the late Delia (Varley) and Thomas J. Connors, Sr., he was a lifelong Jersey City resident. He signed up for service during the Korean Conflict from 1950-1955, becoming a sergeant in the Marine Corps., assigned to the Special Tactic’s Division. Upon the end of the war, he returned to the states, where he started his very long employment with the Western Union Telegraph Company, retiring after 39 years of service.
He was an active member of the American Legion Post 427 from the 1960s to 2008, when that post merged with another. During his years in Post 427, he was elected post commander for several terms.
He was the husband of the late Margaret Cowan Connors; father of Mark (Laurie) Connors of Wanaque, Kevin Michael Connors of Jersey City, Tracey (David) Eastin of Brentwood, Tenn., and Sean Connors of Jersey City, an elected Jersey City school board member and just recently elected to the state Assembly for the 33rd District; grandfather of Alexandra and Victoria Connors; and brother of Rita Hermanns of Randolph, and the late Mary L.
