Sen. Stack’s letter on PA Hikes

Dear Editor:
I write to voice my strong opposition to the recently proposed fare hikes by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. While I commend the Port Authority on their efficiency and mission, at the current time, fare increases should not be considered. Commuting is an essential component of employment for many residents in our region. As the economy remains uncertain, many residents do not have the luxury of evaluating employment prospects based on commuting costs.
Such fare increases will have a direct and real impact on family budgets. Each week, I am visited by hundreds of residents who share stories of financial hardship, which reflect the current economic times.
During the past few years, many public agencies have learned to do more with less, simply because that was the only way to survive. The Port Authority must follow these same measures and evaluate all other ways to maintain current levels of service, while not increasing fares.
As the Senator who represents the 33rd District, I feel especially compelled to voice my opposition, as both inter-state tunnels are in my district along with Path Stations. During the next few weeks, I will be working alongside officials to combat this proposal and ensure that local commuters will not be subjected to such increases.

Sincerely,
Brian P. Stack
State Senator
