Hudson-based Goya and United Way of Hudson County Team Up to Fight Hunger Goya Partners with United Way to donate one million pounds of food
April 25, 2011, Jersey City, NJ – The United Way of Hudson County joined with Hudson County-based Goya Foods last week to announce the donation of one million pounds of food in the U.S. and Puerto Rico to help fight hunger at a press conference at the New Meadowlands Stadium, announced United Way of Hudson County President Dan Altilio.
Taking place on the 75th day of Goya’s 75th year, the historic one million pound donation will be coordinated by United Way Worldwide.
Goya’s Secaucus, NJ distribution center will serve as the flagship for the effort donating 175,000 pounds of food to United Way of Hudson County and United Way of New York.
“Ten thousand pounds of food will stay in Secaucus and be delivered to the new emergency food pantry at 210 Meadowlands Parkway operated by the Town of Secaucus,” said Altilio. “We will also be coordinating the delivery of tens of thousands of pounds to other locations throughout Hudson County.”
The nationwide efforts will take place in the following Goya markets, each of which will receive at least 75,000 pounds of food: Boston; Buffalo; Chicago; Houston; Los Angeles; New York Tri-state area; Miami; Orlando; Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C.
Goya, which moved to Secaucus from New York in 1973, was founded by Don Prudencio Unanue and his wife Carolina. Their grandson, Goya Executive Vice President Peter Unanue, said that his grandparents would be amazed to see the growth of the company and happy that it has “kept the same values and mission.”

“My grandfather was an immigrant struggling to provide for his family,” said Unanue. “Today we’re grateful to be part of a growing Hispanic community that enables us to be in a position to give back like this.”
Altilio praised the Unanue family and Goya’s ongoing efforts to fight hunger. “This is a special and monumental donation but it’s typical of Goya. They consistently give back to the community year in and year out. We’re proud to have them as part of the Hudson County business community.”
